The BLS Employment Situation Summary was released, showing the unemployment rate is back down to 9.5% (the lowest since last July) though 125,000 jobs were lost. The loss in jobs reflects the 225,000 temporary jobs that were shed from the 2010 Census. Meanwhile, the private sector payroll added 83,000 jobs last month in various industries.
The report showed that many people were still having a hard time finding work. The number of long-term unemployed (those unemployed for 27 weeks or more) stayed the same at 6.8 million. However, about 600,000 jobs have been added in the private sector this year, compared to 3.7 million jobs that were lost in the first half of last year.
Many industries saw modest increases in the number of jobs in June. Leisure and hospitality jobs increased by 28,000 and temporary jobs increased by 21,000. Transportation and warehousing jobs increased by 15,000 while healthcare jobs and manufacturing jobs increased by 9,000 each.
